1. A sense of reality about where you are.
We work with clients all the time who still think that a site builder will be enough to land them on the first page, but more times than not this simply isn’t the case. I know some of you who follow my blog are working hard to see your results and that is the key…this stuff takes time, and hard work. Hopefully, I can help steer you to working on the right things so you can cut down on the time you spend. So first thing to do is recognize that unless you hire a professional firm to do your internet marketing, you will be spending some time working hard.

2. Get a blog or go home.
Every single client that we have help land on the first page regardless of their industry or product has required us setting up a blog for them. Most people think they are a waste of time, but of all the things that will propel your site to super-stardom a blog takes center stage! Here’s the trick though. You have to write content that is genuinely helpful to other and that relates to your search terms. For example if one of your search terms is “dog grooming” you had better be filling your blog with tips on how to groom a dog. The more helpful the article the more other groomers will want to read it and tell others.

3. Articles are like Jello… You can never have enough and there’s always room for more.
OK, I can’t stress this enough. The more articles you write and submit about stuff people want to know about the better. Here’s a trick…always use link text. Here is what I mean: A link text is basically one of your search terms that links back to your site. For example in an article about “how to groom your dog from home” have a link in there such as dog grooming kits that links back to your site. Fortunately for you and your readers you happen to sale dog grooming kits on your website. Then submit those articles to submission sites. There is an article that I wrote a few months back to help you called The top 100 article submission sites.

4. If you are not a social media nerd…become one.
Use facebook, twitter, linked in, and other social media sites to promote your articles, blog and website. One of the most effective ways to get the word out about your information is to post a teaser tag on twitter that links back to your blog. Here is the thing though, if you plan to enter the world of social media you have to be prepared to keep fresh content coming. Once people feel like you have nothing more to offer they will move on. The most read blogs in the world have weekly or even daily content that is relevant to their target.

5. Stay the course
Did you know that 98% of people give up just as they were about to have a breakthrough. Many poeple have heard the story of Thomas Edison. He invented the light bulb and failed 1001 times, when asked how he felt about his 1001 failures, he replied “I didn’t fail, I found 1001 ways not to make a light buld, but I only needed one way to make it work”. So here is what I will say, don’t give up! Keep reading and experimenting with your internet marketing. Its only a matter of time before the 1st page is a reality.

1. Duplicate Content

Let’s put it this way, each page of your website should have unique content. Google is becoming increasingly sophisticated in catching site that simply duplicate a page and rename it thinking it will help with page rank. Having multiple named pages is helpful such as internet-marketing-tips.htm and search-engine-tricks.htm however make sure the content on each of these pages varies greatly. The essence can be the same, but large sections of text had better not be or say hello to page 100 instead of page 1.

2. Use a site builder

Many people are falling for the bad mistake of using a cheap $8.95 a month site builder. Even reputable site builders like Yahoo are built on a system of duplicating pages and Meta tags. The result is no organic placement on Google. They will advertise top placement on Google (they mean PPC or pay per click sponsored links) but Google will not rank rank you organically. Make sure your content is original and don’t use a site builder. Build it yourself or hire a professional.

3. The Cloak

There is an old trick from the early 2000’s called cloaking that seems to still find its way into poorly constructed sites. The basic idea behind cloaking is, build a page that is built to look one way to a visitor and another way to a search robot. Google has figured this out and will kick you off pretty quick.

In short, make sure your pages look and function the same for the humans and the robots. No discrimination please among the species

4. Hide your text and Google will hide you.

Another big mistake that was a trick from years past is hiding text. It used to be, you could put a bunch of keyword friendly text at the bottom of your page and make it the same color as your background. The visitor wouldn’t see it but a robot spider would. This is a classic mistake and a great way to slip into obscurity.

5. Bad Keywords (check the header!)

Keywords in your “meta” section of your header tell Google and other search engines the essence of your content, however if you use keywords that you can’t find in the content of that page, you’re in trouble. Make sure all of your keywords in your header section can also be found in the content of your page.

6. Too many redirects

As a general rule redirects or a redirect 301 (permanent redirect) is very useful and helpful to search placement, but it can be overdone. Avoid having 4 or 5 websites with very little content that simply redirect to your site.

Redirects are used mainly for multiple domains that need to point to a single domain or for older pages that need to be redirected internally to an area of your site. The worst idea is to create a bunch of low content, 1 page sites that redirect to your main site. Google is smart and they will make you look foolish for this one.

7. Stack the titles

Stacking titles is very similar to the duplicating content error. Don’t have multiple pages with the same title. For example, you might name a page in your <title> tag as “great internet marketing tips” don’t name another page “great internet marketing tips in Chicago” the bulk of these page titles are the same and Google will probably become irritated. Irritating the #1 search engine in the world is not recommended.

8. Be a criminal of the internet

I know it’s a no-brainier, but it had to make the list. If you distribute spy-ware or viruses you’re out.  Just play by the rules, do your homework and continue reading articles like this one and you’ll be on the 1^st page in no time.

9. Automated submission (the rookie mistake)

Don’t use automated link submission services!! This is a major bad move. Google will ban you immediately. I know it sounds convenient to just auto submit your site to “over 100 search engines”, but it really ties up resources on Google’s end and they get mad. Just don’t do it! You can submit your site at the following links. http://www.google.com/addurl/ (google) http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx (bing) Yahoo cost money, but you will rank anyway if you do well with Google and Bing.

10. Steal  content

I know it can be difficult to come up with original content, but go ahead and copy off someone else and see what happens. You’ll feel like you’re back in school and got caught by the teacher.  Google is very particular about this one. They know who had the content there first and they get pretty upset with plagiarizers. if you like someone content use a track back and give full credit to the content and you will be fine.

Right your own content and enjoy the success, copy and say bye-bye to your page rank.

In Conclusion

First:
Download the Alexa tool bar and install it on every computer you have access to.

Second:
Once that is done set your website that you want ranked, or multiple site as the home page using Alexa’s toolbar

Third:
Go to Alexa’s Website and set up an administrator account

Fourth:
Login and build a site widget and place the code on your main landing page (usually the home page or index)

Fifth:
Sit back and watch your traffic rank increase.

NOTE:Some of you may be thinking this is just a trick and that Alexa’s rank must not mean much if its that easy. However, keep in mind the 5 steps above simply allow Alexa to know you are there even if you have a low page rank. Then every time someone goes to your site the rank number will decrease.  Our site went from 10,000,000 in ranking to 458,081 in four weeks. Our traffic as a result as quadrupled.

The Power of Facebook
Facebook is the fastest growing site besides Google right now. According to Facebook, the average user has 130 friends on the site; More than 8 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide); that is a huge audience. As a result links from Facebook to your website are considered ‘golden links’ and carry a lot of weight with Google. However, how do we get people to link us from their Facebook page? The best thing to do is exactly what I am doing now. Write articles of interest that link back to your website or blog, and then ask your friends on Facebook to link your site to their Facebook page. At the least if you have 100 friends you should be able to gain 25 back links. Spend time or spend money?
Like all internet marketing there is no quick and easy fix that will magically shoot you to the top of Google’s first page. Although many companies will make that claim, it’s really just a lot of time spent working on the right things that can make a difference in your website traffic performance.
